“SUPERMAN and THE AUTHORITY annotations PART 2”

By Guttersnipe on February 16, 2022 • ( Leave a comment )

Listen up, everybody, Grant Morrison has some things to say! “To undermine the fundamental appeal of superheroes like Superman and Supergirl by re-casting them as anti-heroes at best or outright monsters – dragging imaginary childhood paragons off their pedestals to reinforce a fairly facile point about the tendency […]

Red Dead Redemption Online’s Rift Trails Posse

By Guttersnipe on February 11, 2022 • ( Leave a comment )

Kota Ibushi: Wrestling Savant and Giant Kaiju-Fighting Hero

By Sachin Hingoo (he|him|his) on February 10, 2022 • ( 4 Comments )

I don’t think I have to tell you that pro wrestlers are a generally mercurial bunch. You pretty much have to be in order to exist between the real and unreal worlds where pro wrestling resides, that blurred-line known as Kayfabe*. Of these profoundly odd men and women, […]

Check out a gallery of Lewis Hackett and his AI’s sweet fake 1970s SF pulp covers here. “Even as these algorithms get a lot more sophisticated than averaged pixels or a Markov chain, they are still just algorithms, lacking in agency, albeit with enormous data sets as source […]

The Cultural Gutter is a website dedicated to thoughtful writing about disreputable art. The site is updated every Thursday afternoon. Carol Borden, Angela Englert, Sachin Hingoo, Alex MacFadyen, and Beth Watkins probe science fiction, draw out the best in comics, stare deeply into the screen, sink their fangs into horror, dally with romance, speedrun their brains on videogames and explore so much more. Our Guest Stars shine here. Thanks to Gutter aesthetic director Brian Kirby for all his swank art. Thanks to EJ Lee for providing the fantastic art we used in the Cultural Gutter book. The Cultural Gutter's signature nail polishes, "Disreputable," and, "Disreputable 2: Hellcat," were created by Andrea Evans of MPZ Cosmetics. MPZ Cosmetics also teamed up with Dill McKinley to recreate the classic fragrance, Cornichon by Dill McKinley for Gutterthon 2021.
