“A Tragically Bitter kind of Folk Horror: Shadowland (Finland, 2024)”

By Guttersnipe on October 7, 2024 • ( Leave a comment )

The Gutter’s own Carol Borden has some reflections on the new documentary Shadowland: “It’s clear that Shadowland writer/director Otso Tiainen and co-writer Kalle Kinnunen want so much to embrace the landscape of the Montségur and the surrounding French Pyrenees and the esoteric and occult religious community that understand […]

At the Virtues of Captain America Blog, friend of the Gutter Mark D. White writes about 1998’s new Captain America #1! “Over 500 posts to get a Captain America #1, and now we get another one a dozen posts later? Welcome to modern Marvel Comics, where we go […]

Model Misbehavior: Boom (2003)

By Beth Watkins on October 3, 2024 • ( Leave a comment )

I’m not even sorry about that title. Boom (2003, directed and written by Kaizad Gustad) really is about a group of models behaving badly. But it’s also an artifact of one of the classic paths to stardom in Bollywood: the model-turned-actor. The models in the film have to […]

Fantastic Fest 2024: “Danny Villanueva Jr.’s Frightening and Tragic What Happened To Dorothy Bell?”

By Guttersnipe on September 27, 2024 • ( Leave a comment )

At Biff Bam Pop, The Gutter’s own Sachin Hingoo has some thoughts about What Happened To Dorothy Bell? “I’m not sure what it is about public libraries that make them a rich vein for horror. Whether it’s Ghostbusters or Stephen King’s IT, or if you’re somehow spooked by […]

The Cultural Gutter is a website dedicated to thoughtful writing about disreputable art. The site is updated every Thursday afternoon. Carol Borden, Angela Englert, Sachin Hingoo, Alex MacFadyen, and Beth Watkins probe science fiction, draw out the best in comics, stare deeply into the screen, sink their fangs into horror, dally with romance, speedrun their brains on videogames and explore so much more. Our Guest Stars shine here. Thanks to Gutter aesthetic director Brian Kirby for all his swank art. Thanks to EJ Lee for providing the fantastic art we used in the Cultural Gutter book. The Cultural Gutter's signature nail polishes, "Disreputable," and, "Disreputable 2: Hellcat," were created by Andrea Evans of MPZ Cosmetics. MPZ Cosmetics also teamed up with Dill McKinley to recreate the classic fragrance, Cornichon by Dill McKinley for Gutterthon 2021.
