At the Filmi Ladies Podcast, Pitu Sultan and the Gutter’s own Beth Watkins “It’s everyone’s favorite bolt of sunshine: Juhi Chawla! In talking about a range of her films – Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), Yes Boss (1997), and 3 Deewarein (2003) […]

From the Archives: Campus Conjuring

This week Guest Star Kate Laity writes about Fritz Leiber’s Conjure Wife (1943) and two lesser known adaptations. ~~~ I’m currently writing about Fritz Leiber’s Conjure Wife and the 1962 film based on it, Night of the Eagle, AKA, Burn, Witch, Burn! (1962). It’s a pity there are […]

From the Archives: In György Pálfi’s ‘Hen’, the Real Lady Bird is (in) the Eggs We Laid Along The Way

By Sachin Hingoo (he|him|his) on January 1, 2025 • ( Leave a comment )

Anyone that knows me will tell you that I’m a sucker for an unconventional animal-themed film and while it doesn’t have the in-your-face animated aesthetic of last year’s Flow, György Pálfi’s new film ‘Hen’ chicken-scratches that itch in a major way.

“The Nice-ification of the Hobby Shop”

By Guttersnipe on December 31, 2024 • ( Leave a comment )

So we don’t necessarily feel this way–to say that these shops felt tremendously unwelcoming for some of us here at the Gutter is an understatement–but it’s an thoughtful piece and people’s sense of loss and nostalgia is real. “In the last few months of 2022, I started playing Magic: […]

The Cultural Gutter is a website dedicated to thoughtful writing about disreputable art. The site is updated every Thursday afternoon. Carol Borden, Sachin Hingoo, Alex MacFadyen, Beth Watkins, and Michelle Kisner probe science fiction, draw out the best in comics, stare deeply into the screen, sink their fangs into horror, dally with romance, speedrun their brains on videogames, grapple with wrestling, and explore so much more. Our Guest Stars shine here. Thanks to Gutter aesthetic director Brian Kirby for all his swank art. Thanks to EJ Lee for providing the fantastic art we used in the Cultural Gutter book. The Cultural Gutter's signature nail polishes, "Disreputable," and, "Disreputable 2: Hellcat," were created by Andrea Evans of MPZ Cosmetics. MPZ Cosmetics also teamed up with Dill McKinley to recreate the classic fragrance, Cornichon by Dill McKinley for Gutterthon 2021. Follow us on Bluesky, Facebook, and Mastodon. We do not accept unsolicited pitches.
