“I think flouting the Joker’s copyright is funny, and I’m tired of pretending it isn’t.”

At the Verge, Adi Robertson writes about Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker (2022) and copyright law. “I’m not sure exactly how long a copyright term should be to balance artists’ welfare with a cultural commons. I’m not sure exactly what a clearer, more generous fair use system should encompass. (Hyde’s book has some compelling proposals.) But if a law meant to protect artists is leaving weird independent movies in limbo to protect a corporate brand, something has gone deeply wrong.” Read more here.
