“I’m A Whatever!”

At their blog, Tom Alberta writes about the Great Gonzo, Queerness and Jean-Francois Lyotard:

“It’s not exactly a secret: Queers are sneaky. Traditionally deprived of role models who think and act like us, we have become experts in the art of subverting characters in nominally ‘wholesome’ media. Everybody’s got their favourite moments: Velma Dinkley lifting the gang into her Amazonian arms; the impassioned monologues of the X-Men; Bert and Ernie’s domestic bliss. My favourite is Gonzo, the hook-nosed, feathered “Whatever” of The Muppet Show. It helped that I spent my teenage years with my pipe-cleaner arms crammed into a fuzzy blue uniform— truly our match was made in heaven. Since 1976 Gonzo has baffled audiences with his blend of madcap comedy and sudden, devastating pathos. I love Gonzo, and I need to use French linguistic philosophy to tell you why.”
