The cinematography and music do so much to evoke a specific sense of place–of ancient wonder and beauty of mossy brooks and mists moving across ageless peaks. And Tiainen and Kinnunen tell a story of personal reinvention and the stories that people tell and insert themselves into for meaning. It’s just that while Shadowland begins as a story of spiritual seeking, it becomes a story of one man, Australian filmmaker Richard Stanley, using these stories for his personal benefit and at the expense of others.”
