The Gutter’s own Carol Borden has some thoughts on the ridiculous splendor of Morihito Inoue’s Hot Spring Shark Attack / Onsen Shark (Japan, 2024)! “Writer / director Morihito Inoue’s Onsen Shark is his first feature. It premiered at the 2024 Tokyo Shark Film Festival. For the record, I am envious that Tokyo has a shark film festival. Onsen Shark has some similarities to Jaws, as there are in most sharksploitation films. There is a mayor intent on protecting the tourism industry in his town, Atsumi, “The Monaco of the East.” “Atsumi” does sound a bit like “Amity,” the town terrorized by a great white shark and its own mayor in Jaws. And people team up and take to the sea to end the shark menace in both movies. But Onsen Shark is a silly movie and that’s the best thing about it.”
