The Gutter’s own Carol has some thoughts on Paul Vecchiali’s The Strangler (France, 1970). “The Strangler / L’Étrangleur (France, 1970) is a peculiar film, perhaps a Nouvelle Vague policier, but also not. It’s described as a “French giallo” in promotional materials, and I suppose that is as good a description as any. There is a serial killer with an unusual modus operandi, an excellent soundtrack, fantastic title sequence, and 1970s fashion. But The Strangler also a beautifully made, dreamy, almost Existentialist* meditation on isolation, loneliness and the desire to be seen, really seen, by another person.”
